Axel Bruning has a long history of involvement in sleep medicine. He qualified from Wits University in 1979 and then sought further training in Germany where he completed his internship and was a resident in medicine and surgery at The Free University Hospitals of Berlin.

In 1985, he returned to South Africa where he undertook specialist training in Internal Medicine and subsequently specialised in Pulmonology at Chris Hani Baragwananth Hospital. From 1989 to 1991 he was head of the Respiratory Unit at the hospital. In 1991, he moved to the Cape and started his private practice at Gatesville Medical.He was also a consultant in the department of medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital from 1991 to 2002.

Dr Bruning is a member of the South African Thoracic Society, Allergy Society of South Africa, on the faculty of consulting physicians of South Africa, European Respiratory Society and the Sleep Society of South Africa.

He has a special clinical and research interest in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and other breathing related sleep disorders.
